The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), led by CEO Richard Horne, has warned that hostile states like Russia, China, and Iran are increasingly targeting the UK's critical national infrastructure. One of the most worrying aspects is the potential impact of AI. Horne believes that 2028 could be the year when AI-enabled cyber threats become a reality, exploiting vulnerabilities in national infrastructure. The recent emergence of Anthropic's Claude Mythos AI model has only heightened these concerns.
However, experts caution that the majority of breaches still stem from well-established risks, such as weak authentication and unpatched vulnerabilities. This suggests that while AI may pose a future threat, the immediate focus should be on addressing these fundamental cybersecurity issues.
Horne emphasizes the need for organizations to prioritize the "fundamentals" of cybersecurity, such as quick recovery from attacks. He warns that vulnerabilities tolerated in peacetime will certainly be exploited in times of conflict.
The impact of cyber attacks is not limited to boardrooms and IT departments. Horne highlights that it affects individuals too, with potential threats extending to our homes. "If we collectively embrace the contest and believe we can match any opponent, we can prevail," he says.
The UK's experience is not unique. In 2024, the chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster, Pat McFadden, warned of Russia's potential to weaponize AI against key infrastructure. This threat has only grown as tensions with Russia have mounted, as highlighted by the head of MI6, Blaise Metreweli.
In response, the NCSC has recommended that consumers move away from passwords and adopt passkeys, a more secure method of authentication. Passkeys, described as a "digital stamp," provide a stronger defense against modern cyber threats.
